WENATCHEE — The Lake Stevens defense allowed just 15 points to Davis over the final three quarters and the Vikings earned a trip to the 4A state quarterfinals with a 54-34 win on Friday.
“It’s really special,” said Lake Stevens head coach Randall Edens about the win. “A good chunk of the team remembered the bitter taste (of last year’s regionals loss to Skyview) and kind of used the trip to Wenatchee as an incentive.”
Lake Stevens senior guard Brooke Pahukoa carried most of the offensive load with a game-high 28 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Cassidy Fifield made two critical 3-pointers in the first quarter to keep the Vikings in the gam. Junior forward Kali Long, battling the flu, had seven points and played solid defense on Jennifer Morales, the Pirates lone threat in the post.
Davis raced out to an 18-7 lead before Fifield hit her two 3s, her only points of the game, in the last four minutes of the first quarter that helped turn the tide.
“Davis was hitting everything (in the first),” said Edens. “They were shooting lights out. “(Those 3s) allowed us to settle down. We felt we absorbed their first punch.”
Lake Stevens rode that momentum to a 29-24 halftime lead and Pahukoa would not be denied in the final two quarters as the Vikings outscored Davis 25-10 in the second half.
“In the second half Brooke decided to take over,” said Edens. “They didn’t have an answer for her, she shot 11 free throws which showed her aggressive mentality and we were in the double bonus for most of the fourth quarter.”
