LAKE STEVENS — James Tanner scored for Lake Stevens in regulation and goalkeeper Brennan Countryman preserved the victory when he saved the second shootout attempt as Lake Stevens defeated Kamiak 5-4 in the shootout to advance in the 4A District 1 Tournament on Saturday.
Tanner’s goal set the pace for a game that had to be stopped towards the start of the match after a head-on collision between a Knights and Vikings player.
“In the first minute (both teams) lost two guys due to injury,” said Lake Stevens head coach Kit Shanholtzer. “It was strange only being one minute in and then wait for 20 minutes. We were very concerned, it was very scary.”
The injury added to the list of injured players for the Vikings squad, but Tanner provided the necessary leadership that pulled the team through to the victory.
“James is going to be a (Division-1) goalkeeper in Colorado,” said Shanholtzer. “Last year he played keeper for us … but this year we figured he’s a D-1 athlete we might as well put him out on the field. He’s a great center-forward for us and he’s been working hard to be a great teammate all season.”
Tanner’s goal not withstanding, Shanholtzer praised the goal by Kamiak’s Max Acedes. Acedes goal came from 45-yards out and it just sailed over Countryman’s head, in what Shanholtzer called “a goal you’re not going to see twice in one game” to tie the match at 1-1. Despite giving up the long score, Shanholtzer gave Countryman his approval for the day’s long battle.
“During the game he had six of seven shots on goal attempted on him,” said Shanholtzer. “But he soaked them up like a sponge.”
With the win Lake Stevens advances to face Wesco 4A South champ Mariner in a winner-to-state match.
“We have a long history with Mariner,” Shanholtzer said. “So the kids we rested in today’s game, we saved them for that game. When playing a team like Mariner it comes down to who wants it more and who has more heart.”
