Bolstered by a strong youth program, the Lake Stevens softball team has had a lot of success over the past few years. Vikings coach Sarah Hirsch said she believes her team can continue that tradition this spring.
“We’re definitely a playoff-type team,” she said. “We have a good shot to go far. I have no fear of how the kids are going to perform. I know we’ll bring our ‘A’ game to every game we play.”
Lake Stevens (6-0 overall, 2-0 in Wesco 4A play) has scored 55 runs in its first six games, with an offense led by returning all-conference first-team selections Payton Beaver and Makala Akers. Returning all-conference second-team pick Sara Johnson leads the Vikings’ pitching staff, but Hirsch is pleased with the team’s depth in the circle.
“Our core group from last year is back, and those kids have been great leaders. The seniors’ attitude and approach have been totally different,” Hirsch said. “Our chemistry is probably the best it’s been in a couple of years. They play well together and have a good time. They’re relaxed and can joke around with each other, but are focused when it’s time for business. It’s fun to go to practice.”
