Four athletes from Snohomish County-based Karate Northwest traveled to the USA Open in Las Vegas earlier this month and returned home with seven medals, five of them gold.
Leading the way was Marina Hrycenko of Everett, who won four medals, including a pair of golds in kata (forms) in the female age 12-13 advanced division. She also captured silver and a bronze medals in kumite (sparring).
Aleen Mills of Stanwood won a gold medal in kata in the adult female advanced division, and Brandie Robinson of Seattle, in her first USA Open competition, captured golds in both kata and kumite in the adult female novice division.
Theo Pardike of Edmonds narrowly missed a medal, placing fourth in kumite in the male 16-17 advanced division.
In addition to the Karate Northwest athletes, Vienna Krumweide of Everett, who trains in Bellevue, earned a silver medal in kumite in the adult female advanced division.
The USA Open, held April 16-20 at The Paris Las Vegas Hotel &Casino, drew more than 2,000 competitors from 53 countries, said Casey Mills, the head instructor at Karate Northwest.
