Marysville Pilchuck loses to Meadowdale in 3A state softball semis

Some fans believed Shadle Park was one of the favorites to win the 3A state tournament.

But the Highlanders’ dream of a state title was quickly dashed by the No. 4 seed from Wesco.

And Marysville Pilchuck didn’t stop there.

The Tomahawks defeated Columbia River and got to the state semifinals, where they ran into eventual-champion, and league rival, Meadowdale. The Mavericks, who were 1-1 against the Tomahawks prior to Saturday, defeated Marysville Pilchuck 12-2 before the Tomahawks fell 11-10 to Mt. Spokane to end their season.

“The girls are having fun,” said Marysville Pilchuck head coach Aaron Zachry. “Getting an opportunity to come and play at state was one of their goals and they did it. And they showed well. All of our district is in the final eight so that’s a good showing.

“We kept playing. We kept scrapping.”

Despite several injuries that kept two starters out on Saturday the Tomahawks (20-8 overall) continued to fight against Mt. Spokane and showed Zachry just how far they’ve come this season.

“We really worked hard this year on playing unselfish softball and I think they’ve really grown up a lot in the 25-30 games that we get in these three short months,” Zachry said. “We worked on being good teammates and I think they did a really, really good job of that.”
