Mavericks beat Cascade

MILL CREEK – Seniors Jake Linton and Danny Hagen combined for 42 points for Meadowdale as the Mavericks defeated Cascade 66-52 to advance in the 4A District I boys basketball tournament. Meadowdale went into halftime with a 26-20 lead and kept the pressure up, holding the Bruins to just six in the third quarter.

Cascade battled back in the fourth quarter going point for point with Meadowdale, but the last minute offensive surge couldn’t overcome the Mavericks’ early lead. Marcus Guffey equaled Linton’s game-high with 22 for the Bruins, who were eliminated from the tournament.

Meadowdale will meet the loser of tonight’s Kamiak-Shorewood game at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson High School.

Mount Vernon 61, Marysville-Pilchuck 57: Mount Vernon knocked M-P out of the 4A District I tournament despite a season-high 22 points from M-P’s David Gallaher. Ryan Kendrick led the Bulldogs with 18 points, including two of his team’s eight 3-point baskets. In a loser-out game on Tuesday, Mount Vernon next faces the the loser of tonight’s Snohomish-Mountlake Terrace game.

Girls basketball

Bellevue Christian 39, Coupeville 33: Lexie Black’s layup on an assist from Coupeville teammate Whitney Clark sent the 1A District I playoff game into overtime, but Bellevue Christian held the Wolves scoreless in the extra session. Coupeville, which previously qualified for the state tournament, faces Life Christian at 9 a.m. Saturday at Mountlake Terrace for a state No. 1 seed.

Archbishop Murphy 55, Sultan 42: Lisa Coate led all scorers with 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help Archbishop Murphy power past Sultan in the 2A District I tournament. The Wildcats dominated offensively, going 17 of 23 from the free-throw line. Ashley Reinig pulled down eight rebounds, and Coate contributed five steals and six blocks. Molly Sumpter scored a team-high 13 points for Sultan, which was eliminated. Archbishop Murphy plays the loser of the Meridian-King’s game at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Vernon.
