WICHITA, Kan. — Chillicothe right-hander Sean Potter pitched a five-hit shutout as the Mudcats defeated the Everett Merchants 7-0 on Sunday night in a first-round game of the National Baseball Congress World Series at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Potter struck out seven and walked one as the Mudcats improved their record to 29-16.
The Merchants, whose record fell to 30-12 with the loss, play a loser-out game against the Nevada Griffins of Missouri at 10:30 a.m. (CDT) today.
The Mudcats took charge of the game with four runs in the top of the second inning against Merchants’ starting pitcher Nik Lubisich.
Chillicothe’s Jared King — who had three hits in the game — and Mark Robinette opened the second inning with back-to-back singles. Both scored on a one-out single by Jake Brown to give the Mudcats a 2-0 lead. Brett Chamberlin singled and Louie Templeton followed with a two-run triple to increase Chillicothe’s lead to 4-0.
Steve Martin and Brown singled to open the Mudcats’ sixth inning. Following a sacrifice bunt, Martin scored on a one-out infield single by Templeton to give Chillicothe a 5-0 lead.
Chillicothe increased its lead to 6-0 in the seventh when King doubled, stole third base and scored on a throwing error by Lubisich.
The team from Missouri tacked on another run in the top of the ninth. Casey Solem tripled off Everett relief pitcher Tyler Levin and scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh McDorman to give the Mudcats a 7-0 lead.
Lubisich pitched eight innings for the Merchants, allowing six runs on 14 hits while striking out three and walking none. Andy Lyon had two of Everett’s five hits.
