OAKLAND, Calif. — Texas Rangers reliever Jeremy Jeffress has been reinstated by Major League Baseball and joined the team Friday after being placed on the restricted list following an arrest on a drunken driving charge last month.
Jeffress was arrested Aug. 26., less than a month after being acquired in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers before the Aug. 1 deadline.
The right-handed reliever was at an inpatient rehab clinic for a little more than three weeks, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said.
Jeffress was also suspended twice in the minor leagues for violating baseball’s drug rules.
Syndergaard scratched
NEW YORK — The playoff-contending New York Mets say star pitcher Noah Syndergaard has been scratched from his start Saturday night against Philadelphia because of strep throat.
Manager Terry Collins made the announcement before playing the Phillies on Friday night. Reliever Sean Gilmartin will make his first start of the season, taking Syndergaard’s place.
Collins said Syndergaard might be able to start Monday or Tuesday at Miami.
The Mets began the day tied with San Francisco for the top NL wild-card spot, with St. Louis trailing by a half-game.
Syndergaard became the latest Mets pitcher to miss time this year. Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom already have been shut down. Steven Matz originally was set to pitch Friday night, but was scratched because of shoulder trouble.
Syndergaard is 13-9 with a 2.63 ERA and was an All-Star this season. He had been lined up to pitch Oct. 5 in a potential wild-card game.
“Right now, in our situation, we can’t worry about Oct. 5 We’ve got to worry about being there Oct. 1,” Collins said.
Ortiz sets mark
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — David Ortiz has set the record for most RBIs in a final season.
Boston’s 40-year-old designated hitter hit a two-run homer off Tampa Bay’s Chris Archer in the first inning Friday, giving him 124 RBIs.
Ortiz has one more RBI than Shoeless Joe Jackson in 1920. Ortiz’s 37 homers are two more than old mark for most in a final year, set by Dave Kingman in 1986.
Ortiz, who said in November this will be his final season, has hit 300 of his 540 home runs on the road.
