Monday links: Will Winfield return to Seahawks?

By now you’ve certainly heard that Walter Thurmond is reportedly facing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Here’s our story in today’s Herald, and from the News Tribune, a column from John McGrath on the topic.

Thurmond’s suspension quickly led to speculation that the Seahawks might pursue veteran corner Antoine Winfield, who spent training camp with Seattle before being released prior to the start of the season. Winfield, who signed with Seattle in free agency, was expected to be Seattle’s nickel corner this year, but Thurmond played so well that the Seahawks went with the younger (and cheaper) player at that spot. Now Fox Sports’ Mike Garafolo says the Seahawks have reached out to Winfield about a possible return. The idea of brining Winfield back, assuming he has stayed in playing shape, makes sense. He knows the defense, and is a three-time Pro Bowler who is better equipped to play the nickel spot than is any of Seattle’s current corners. One question Winfield will likely want answered, however, is what the Seahawks have in mind for him beyond Thurmond’s suspension. As Garafolo notes in his story, Winfield wants a chance to play in his first Super Bowl, so he isn’t going to come to Seattle if he gets the feeling that he’ll only be a stopgap.

Pete Carroll’s next press conference is Tuesday, but he did do his weekly spot on 710 ESPN Seattle, and as expected he said he can’t comment on the Thurmond situation (coaches face huge fines if they talk about league discipline issues). Carroll did, however, acknowledge that the team could reach out to Antoine Winfield, saying, “With the needs we may have here going into this game, that’s a possibility.”

Peter King’s weekly look around the league at TheMMQB.com touches on Thurmond’s suspension as well.

Dave Boling of the News Tribune has a fun look at John Clayton’s rise from former TNT Seahawks beat writer to ESPN big shot.

ESPN’s Mike Sando has his top Super Bowl contenders and puts the Seahawks on top.

And in former Seahawks quarterback news, Matt Flynn played for Green Bay Sunday, and played pretty well. Robert Klemko of the TheMMQB.com says the Packers should let Aaron Rodgers rest another week and start Flynn on Thanksgiving.
