TACOMA — In a matchup between the Seattle Mariners’ past and their hope for the future, Jamie Moyer outlasted Danny Hultzen as the Las Vegas 51s knocked off the Tacoma Rainiers 11-4 Thursday night in a Class AAA Pacific Coast League baseball action.
The 49-year-old Moyer (1-0) threw five innings and struck out six to earn the win.
The Rainiers got to Moyer early, with Luis Antonio Jiminez hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. Adam Moore added a solo homer off the left-hander in the second.
Hultzen, making his home debut for the Rainiers, threw 90 pitches in four innings, allowing three hits, walking four and striking out six. The only run Hultzen yielded came when he walked Mike McCoy with the bases loaded in the second.
But after Hultzen, the No. 2 pick in the 2011 MLB draft, departed, Las Vegas feasted on the Rainiers’ bullpen, scoring six runs off Steven Hensley in the fifth. The 51s added two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to put the game out of reach.
Jackson High School grad Travis Snider had three hits and two RBI for Las Vegas.
