Mountlake Terrace cross country coach Todd Weber said he believes both of his squads could potentially advance to the Class 2A state meets this fall.
“I have optimistic thoughts about both teams,” he said. “(District 1) will have an extra state berth this year, which opens things up for us team-wise and individually. Between the (extra) berth and the amount of returners we have on both teams, I’d like to think we’ll be right in the mix at the end of the season.”
The Hawks’ boys squad was dealt a blow with the loss of Josh Beam to a back injury, but Weber said the team has enough depth to compensate, led by junior Jaden Lofrese and sophomore Alex Williams. On the girls side, Mountlake Terrace has four experienced seniors at the top — Joan Park, Meagan Williams, Marika Jamtaas and Sandra Hart. Park and Jamtaas were part of the Hawks’ team that finished second at the 3A state meet in 2014 and sixth in 2015.
“The cool thing about this group of boys is that they’re all multi-sport athletes — they’re doing baseball, wrestling, basketball, soccer,” Weber said. “That’s what makes them unique. They know how to compete. And we have a very experienced group of young ladies. They definitely know what it takes to compete at (a high) level.”
