Nationals call up Cascade grad Souza

WASHINGTON — Steven Souza Jr. is back in the big leagues.

The Washington Nationals called up the Cascade High School graduate from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday to replace injured outfielder Nate McLouth.

This is Souza’s second stint in the majors. The 25-year-old outfielder was first called up in April and hit .125 (1-for-8) in eight games with the Nats. “The whole experience was, honestly, just awesome,” Souza said at the conclusion of his first trip to the big leagues.

In 91 games with Syracuse this season, Souza hit .354, with 18 home runs and 70 RBI. At the time of his promotion, he was leading the International League in hitting.

McLouth, 32, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with shoulder inflammation. He was batting .179 in 79 games, including 33 starts, with one homer and seven RBI. The move is retroactive to Saturday.
