It was a good-news, bad-news Friday for the Seahawks on the injury front, with Pete Carroll announcing that receiver Percy Harvin will not be able to play in Sunday’s NFC championship game, the result of a concussion he suffered in last weekend’s win over New Orleans, but that linebacker K.J. Wright made it through the week of practice, and will play in his first game since he fractured a foot six weeks ago in San Francisco.
“He will not make it through the doctors’ protocol, he will be able to go,” Carroll said of Harvin, who has appeared in only two games this season, the result of last summer’s hip surgery.
“It’s super disappointing for Percy, he wants to play. You can see he played his tail off when he had his chance, it’s just unfortunate circumstances. He’ll be back practicing next week, he’ll be ready to go and get back at it. We’ll be thrilled to have him back. But we have functioned the way we’ve functioned because we don’t let things like that get to us and disturb us in how we’re thinking and preparing and all of that. We’d love to have him, but not at this time.”
Of course for Harvin to be back next week, the Seahawks will need to take care of business against the 49ers Sunday.
On Wright, who had surgery on his foot following that game in San Francisco, Carroll said, “K.J. Wright made it through practices and he’s going to play in this football game. We’re really excited about that. It’s an incredible recovery to have surgery six weeks ago, and now he’s playing. So many people did well by that to get to here, and his mentality has been to play the whole time, so he had a fine week of practice and we’ll play him.”
Carroll said there would be no restrictions on Wright, but would not say if he or Malcolm Smith will get the start. Wright, however, said he was not expecting to start, but that he did not know what his role will be. Even if the Seahawks decide to ease Wright back into the game action, he would represent a very good option as a backup should one of the starters suffer an injury.
