Pete Carroll on decision to release Chester Pitts

Pete Carroll explained after Thursday’s practice that the decision to cut G Chester Pitts was based on the fact that Pitts wasn’t going to be able to play this weekend, and the team needed the roster spot.

Carroll hopes the team can bring Pitts back once he’s healthy, but for now they need another healthy body on the offensive line. The situation is complicated a bit by the fact that the Seahawks have two roster spots occupied by linemen who were signed Tuesday and aren’t yet familiar with the offense: G Allen Barbre and T Breno Giacomini.

Here’s some of what Carroll had to say:

Why the decision to release Pitts

“Chester wasn’t going to be able to make it to the game, he wasn’t going to be able to play. In the situation we’re in, we’ve got to make a spot for a guy to be on the roster. We’re hoping Chester is going to get well, he’s just got to get over the hump. He’s close, but he’s not able to go yet. So we needed a spot and that’s why we had to create that. He’s been working like crazy, and we’re hoping he’ll be able to be back here before long.”

Who takes the spot?

“It’s likely that you’re going to see Gibson move back into that spot. That’s what we’re counting on.”

How tough was the decision?

“John [Schneider] talked to him. I’m hoping Chester understands what we’re doing here. We need a roster spot right now and he can’t play… This is something we had to do.”

Was there a setback with his knee injury?

“Well he was a little sore after yesterday’s workout and he wasn’t going to be able to practice today. The message was that we weren’t going to be able to get him back in time. We’ve been trying and he’s been working hard at it. He’s been a diligent worker to get right, it just hasn’t been enough time for him yet. As soon as it does, we’re going to try to get him back out here.”
