A 20-pound Lake Chelan Mackinaw (lake trout) came from the bar a week or so ago, the same area where the state record 35-pounder was caught in 2013. Anton Jones, a longtime Lake Chelan guide service owner, said the summer months on the bar are consistently the best place and time to look for larger fish. Jones said this time of year his boats make it a habit to fish the bar early in the morning and/or late in the evening.
“The Bar,” Jones said, is right in front of the Mill Bay ramp and easy to find as you head toward Wapato Point. Troll 3 to 5 feet off the bottom in 120 to 170 feet of water at a speed of about 1.2 mph.
Jones said the T4 Purple Glow Flatfish seems to be the go-to lure for bigger fish on the bar.
This fishery is a good one for kids and novice anglers because there is usually plenty of action on lakers in the 2- to 5-pound range and the guides are sensitive to beginners’ needs. A whole lot of anglers have caught their first fish with Jones over the years, and he’s available for information at Darrell & Dad’s Family Guide Service (509-687-0709) or www.darrellanddads.com.
