Prep baseball: Edmonds-Woodway 14, Mountlake Terrace 7

EDMONDS — In a game with plenty of offense, and plenty of pitching relief, Edmonds-Woodway was able to overpower Mountlake Terrace in earning a 14-6 victory in a nonleague game on Monday.

Sophomore Jason Smarr, playing in his first varsity game, paced the Warriors by batting 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and five RBI.

Smarr’s doubles certainly weren’t the only extra base hits in the game. Overall, 11 of the game’s 21 total hits were hit for extra bases.

“The ball was really carrying today,” said Edmonds-Woodway coach Dan Somoza. “It seemed like every ball was hit hard, it was kind of nice to play in the nice weather, completely opposite from what we’ve been playing in.”

Ben Roquet added a double of his own, while batting 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Patrick Bernard hit the games lone triple.

Senior Josh Fitch led the Hawks hitters by batting 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.

With the win, Edmonds-Woodway improves to 12-3 overall and remains in first place in the Wesco South standings.

When asked how this game prepared the Warriors for district’s Somoza added, “Mountlake Terrace is a really great team. Playing in a nonleague game like we did today really gave us a chance to do some different things, and gave us a really good battle test of what we will see later in the season.”
