Prep baseball: Edmonds-Woodway 2, Kamiak 1 (9)

MUKILTEO — The Kamiak baseball team put up a good fight against Wesco 4A South-leading Edmonds-Woodway, but eventually surrendered 2-1 in a nine-inning pitchers duel.

Austin Hansen pitched all nine innings for the Knights and gave up just two runs — one in the third to tie the game 1-1 and another in the top of the ninth — but took the loss despite the valiant effort.

Pitching so many innings may have caught up with Hansen, who hit Tate Budnick in the top of the ninth, then overthrew first base on a pickoff play to allow him to advance to second. The next batter hit a ground ball to second that advanced Budnick to third and Marc Campagnaro drove him in with a one-out pinch-hit single. That put the Warriors up 2-1, and Austin Holmes held that lead to preserve Edmonds-Woodway’s (5-0 league, 8-2 overall) unblemished record in Wesco 4A South play.

Jorgen Arneson pitched the first six innings for the Warriors, but reached his pitch limit according to Edmonds-Woodway head coach Dan Somoza, who brought in Austin Holmes to finish the game. The two pitchers combined to give up seven hits and struck out six.

“It was just a pitching duel. … It just came to whoever got a little luck and then a clutch hit,” said Somoza.

“(Hansen) was throwing every pitch for a strike. We were having trouble getting hits off him, but so were they off our guys.”

The Warriors have played 17 innings in two days with the Knights (2-3, 4-5) and won both games by one run. They finish the three game series at home on Friday.

“Our league is very tough. Kamiak is always tough. I’m just happy we got both one-run games. Hopefully we can get a third one.
