Prep boys basketball: Everett 56, Marysville Pilchuck 53

MARYSVILLE —In a battle for second place in the Wesco 3A North division, the Everett boys basketball team rallied late to beat Marysville Pilchuck 56-53 Wednesday night.

The Tomahawks found themselves in an early hole down 13-7 in the first quarter, but a 18-9 second quarter — that included four 3-pointers — gave MP a three point lead at the half.

Marysville Pilchuck held a seven-point lead with just under six minutes to play, but a full court press by the Seagulls rallied a fourth-quarter comeback. Everett went 8-for-12 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, and with 15 seconds to play, Paul Larson made two free throws to give the Seagulls a three point lead.

“They just put the ball in the hole when it counted,” Marysville Pilchuck head coach Bary Gould said. “And we couldn’t find the cup.”

With the Tomahawks focused on Everett’s leading scorer Jace Chacon, point guard David Popach stepped up for the Seagulls, scoring a game-high 23 points — including three 3-pointers. Josh Bevan lead a balanced scoring attack for the Tomahawks with 13 points.

Everett clinched the No. 2 seed in the Wesco 3A North division with tonight’s win and will play Shorecrest in the first round of the district tournament which gets underway on Tuesday.
