Prep girls basketball: Everett 60, Meadowdale 58

EVERETT — Sidney Rielly gave Everett its first lead of the game — and what would turn out to be a 60-58 victory over Meadowdale — with a putback basket with 4 seconds to play in a Wesco 3A clash.

Rielly, a 5-foot-10 sophomore guard led the Seagulls with 16 points, including 10 in a critical third quarter as Everett climbed back into the game after trailing 32-19 at the break.

Meadowdale, with all-Wesco senior guard Margreet Barhoum leading the way with a game-high 28 points, dominated the first half. The Mavericks defense was particularly troubling for Everett, as it forced 19 turnovers — the same total as the Seagulls’ first-half point total.

“Meadowdale came out and pressured us all over the court and we didn’t respond very well to it,” Everett head coach John Low said. “We talked about it at halftime and I just told them that we’re not going to be able to win this game if we continue to play like this.”

It’s safe to say the Seagulls got that message. In the third quarter Everett outscored Meadowdale 23-13 behind the aforementioned 10 from Rielly to cut the lead to three. Yet it wasn’t until Kiki Harper knocked down a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left in the fourth quarter that the Seagulls were able to catch Meadowdale. Harper’s 3-point basket created the first tie, 58-58, since the beginning of the game. “(Harper) just kind of found herself open on the wing,” Low described of the tying basket. “It was huge.”

Everett outrebounded Meadowdale 32-19 for the game with Amber Hagar and Calea Carr combining for 21. Carr also chipped in 10 points and Hagar added six. The come-from-behind win also helped Everett remain undefeated for the season and atop the Wesco 3A standings.

With a big game coming up next week against league rival Glacier Peak, coach Low downplayed his team’s early success.

“Like everybody in the league, we brought back a lot of players. We have girls that work hard and focus on defense,” Low said. “This year we realize there are other ways to win besides just outscoring people.”
