Prep girls basketball: Mountlake Terrace 50, Glacier Peak 48

SNOHOMISH — The first Associated Press Prep Basketball Poll of the season came out Wednesday afternoon and the Glacier Peak and Mountlake Terrace girls basketball teams both found spots in the top ten.

Wednesday evening the two teams played with No. 7 Mountlake Terrace hanging on to upset No. 4 Glacier Peak 50-48 in a Wesco 3A South contest at Glacier Peak High School.

“It was just an even battle the whole game,” said Glacier Peak head coach Brian Hill. “Terrace was ahead for most of the game and we sort of came storming back in the fourth quarter and made it interesting.”

Mountlake Terrace built an early lead, getting to as high as “maybe seven or eight,” according to Hill. The Grizzlies made a run in the fourth quarter — the only quarter they outscored Mountlake Terrace — but came up just short. With five seconds to play and a three-point lead, the Hawks fouled immediately after Glacier Peak threw the ball in.

The Grizzly made the first of a one-and-one free throw, but intentionally bounced the second shot off the rim. Both teams fought for the rebound and a jump ball was called, with the possession arrow pointing Mountlake Terrace’s way.

“Both teams battled hard,” Hill said. “It was a game we both wanted. And it showed.”

Nikkie Forehlich had 15 points to lead the Hawks (3-1 league, 8-3 overall). Glacier Peak focused its defense on Mountlake Terrace guard Samantha Romanowski, who finished with 10 points.

Shaian Pagaling added 10 for the Hawks.

“We knew Froehlich could hurt us,” Hill said, “and she got the better of us a little bit.”

Taylor Baird and Sadie Mensing had 12 points apiece to lead Glacier Peak (2-2, 9-2).
