PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Archbishop Murphy clinches top seed to district

EVERETT — Archbishop Murphy senior Shelby Lyman made her mark in the record book during a Cascade Conference girls basketball game Tuesday night at Archbishop Murphy High School.

Lyman, a 5-foot-8 guard, broke the school record for career 3-pointers during the third quarter of a 62-20 win over Lakewood.

“She’s an excellent 3-point shooter,” Archbishop Murphy head coach John Barhanovich said, “but she’s like a coach on the floor. She calls all the defensive and some of the offensive plays … she understands the game so well that I put a lot of the decision making in her hands.”

Lyman’s accomplishment couldn’t have come on a better night as the Wildcats celebrated “Senior Night” with their 45th consecutive Cascade Conference win.

Megan Carlson, Samantha Pettinger, Savannah Fletcher, Nickole Bartholomew and Lyman lead a balanced Murphy squad on the cusp of clinching the Cascade Conference title and the league’s No. 1 seed to the 2A District 1 tournament.

“They are just a selfless group,” Barhanovich said of his team which finished as runner-up to Lynden in the 2A state tournament last season. “They don’t care who scores, they just want to make their teammates better. They are a well-rounded team that cares more about how the team is doing than individual stats.”

The numbers show it.

The Wildcats (11-0 league, 15-2 overall) had 15 players see time against Lakewood and 13 scored points.

“The last time they lost a league contest was in the middle of their freshman year,” Barhanovich said of his five senior starters.
