Prep girls basketball: Shorecrest 59, Glacier Peak 51

SHORELINE — The stakes were clear for both teams in the final Wesco 3A game for Shorecrest and Glacier Peak: Winner gets second place in league and a chance at two home games in the upcoming District 1 playoffs.

Shorecrest used its home court, where the Scots are 9-1 on the year, and a stifling defense to keep the Grizzlies at bay en route to a 59-51 victory.

Scots coach Dori Monson was relieved to get the win because he thinks home-court advantage will be big in the playoffs.

“As great as all the teams are going to be in the playoffs, that’s important,” Monson said.

As has been the norm this season Brianne Lasconia led the way for the Scots, tallying 21 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

“I think she’s playing as well as anyone in the state right now,” Monson said.

More important on this night was shutting down Glacier Peak’s 1-2 punch of seniors Katie Hawkins and Taylor Rasmussen. Hawkins was second on the team with 10 points, behind Torrey Hill’s team-high 13. Rasmussen was held to a lone 3-pointer.

“Holding (Hawkins) to 10 was a defensive triumph for us and we wanted to mimimize Rasmussen getting off 3-point shots,” Monson said.

Sophmore Onyie Chibuogwu had a big game that belied her age, scoring 12 points and grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds for the Scots.
