CAMANO ISLAND — Jackson’s Laura Gay shot an 86 to win both the second round and the overall title at the Wesco 4A District 1 girls golf tournament held at Camaloch Golf Course on Monday.

Gay began the second round three strokes behind first round co-leaders Grace Choi of Kamiak and Jade Borseth of Stanwood. Borseth fell out of contention on the front nine, but Choi increased her lead to four shots over Gay entering the back nine. Gay then began her rally, firing a 42 over the last nine to finish with a combined score of 183 and edge Choi by one stroke for overall honors.

Despite finishing second, Grace Choi led an impressive Kamiak squad to the overall team title and the Knights placed all six golfers in the top-14, narrowly missing having the entire team automatically qualify for the state tournament. Juliana Jorgenson (4th), Mady Kornegay (t-7th), Katherine Choi (9th) and Hannah Lee (11th) will join Grace Choi at the state tournament. Katie Ewing (14th) finished one shot behind Arlington’s Lauren Grogan for the final state berth and is first alternate. The top 13 golfers qualified for the 4A state tournament, to be played at MeadowWood G.C. in Liberty Lake on May 22-23.

Snohomish finished second in the team standings and four Panthers’ golfers — Bailey Wells (3rd), Dani Weir (5th), Missy Colegrove (8th) and Ashley Holten (12th) — will compete at state.

Also finishing in the top 13 was Borseth, who finished tied with Kornegay and won a chip off for sixth, Edmonds-Woodway’s Sung Byun (10th). Lake Stevens’ Mackenzie Sundvor and Julia Elton both tied for 15th. Elton won the playoff and is the second alternate.
