Four local prep events to keep an eye on this week:
1. Baseball: Arlington at Lake Stevens, 4 p.m. Tuesday. The Eagles won the Wesco 3A regular-season championship last season, advanced to the 3A state tournament quarterfinals and return one of the area’s best players in Gavin Rork. The Vikings finished fourth in Wesco 4A in 2017, but played well in the postseason and qualified for the 4A state tournament. Their top player is infielder Conor Bardue, who was an All-Wesco 4A first-team pick last season.
2. Softball: Snohomish at Jackson, 4 p.m. Thursday. This contest could revolve around the matchup of two of the area’s true ace pitchers — the Panthers’ Bailey Greenlee and the Timberwolves’ Iyanla Pennington. Both teams advanced to their respective state tournaments a year ago and will be favored to do so again this spring.
3. Boys soccer: East Valley (Yakima) at Archbishop Murphy, 4 p.m. Saturday. This will be a rematch of last season’s 2A state championship game, which the Wildcats won 8-0. Archbishop Murphy has won 43 straight games and the past three 2A state championships, but will have an entirely new nucleus this season. Of the Wildcats’ nine All-Cascade Conference players from a year ago, only one returns — midfielder Sam Johnson.
4. Girls golf: Whidbey Shootout, 11:30 a.m., March 20. This tournament, held at Whidbey Golf Club, features more than 20 teams, including Arlington, Edmonds-Woodway, Glacier Peak, Jackson, Kamiak, Lakewood, Lake Stevens, Meadowdale, Marysville Getchell, Marysville Pilchuck, Shorecrest, Snohomish, Stanwood, Shorewood and South Whidbey.
