STANWOOD — Stanwood earned a hard-fought 5-2 win over Snohomish in a Wesco North girls tennis match Wednesday at Stanwood High School.

Stanwood earned three singles wins, including a three-set win in No. 2 singles by Kallen Shaugnessy.

Shaughnessy, making just her second start at No. 2 singles this season after playing No. 1 doubles with Amme Verbarendse for much of the year, dropped the first set to Snohomish’s Brady Coad, but rebounded for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win.

“That was really strong,” Stanwood head coach Trudy Abrams said of Shaughnessy’s comeback win. “Kallen was really disciplined.”

The Spartans took two three-set doubles matches at Nos. 1 and 2 before dropping the No. 3 doubles match also in three sets. The No. 2 doubles team of Heather Baxter and Heather Smith earned a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win for the Spartans.

“That’s the second match they’ve played together,” Abrams said of Baxter and Smith. “They started playing really well together.”

The win gives the Spartans (11-1 league, 11-1 overall) a little bit more breathing room at the top of the conference as Snohomish’s record fell to 9-3, 9-3.

“It was a tough match, it always is with Snohomish,” Abrams said. “There’s always a lot on the line it seems when we play them.

“It’s exciting (to be first in the conference), but we’re not done yet. We still want to capitalize and get our girls ready for the league (tournament).”
