Prep softball: Cascade 3, Glacier Peak 0

SNOHOMISH — Four games into the 2013 season and the Cascade Bruins softball team have still not allowed a single run.

Bruins starter Makinlee Sellevold threw a complete game shutout, with 11 strikeouts, and allowed just two hits to lead Cascade past Glacier Peak 3-0.

“It was pretty one-sided,” admitted Glacier Peak head coach Caitlin Nies. “Sellevold hit her spots really well and kept us off balance. She worked ahead (in the count) and we weren’t able to make good contact.”

Sellevold also went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Taryn Salter added two hits and a RBI.

Grizzlies pitcher Callie Bircher struck out eight and was able to keep the powerful Cascade offense in single digits for the first time this season, but the Bruins managed to score two runs in the fourth to take the lead. Salter singled to drive in Chloe McIntosh and Sellevold scored on Courtnie Gallardo’s fielder’s choice.

Cascade tacked on the final run in the seventh when catcher Alex Deaver led off with a triple and scored on Aubrey Peterson’s infield grounder.

While both teams have received strong pitching so far this season, the difference is the teams’ hitting. Cascade is averaging over nine runs a game, while the Glacier Peak offense has been struggling. The Grizzlies have scored just eight runs in their last five games combined, including being shutout in their last two contests.

“I think we’ve faced a lot of good pitching, it’s going to help us more down the road,” said Nies. “We need to be more aggressive and put balls in play more.”
