EVERETT — Archbishop Murphy appeared to have the game in hand when Anna Whitehouse gave the Wildcats the early lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. Granite Falls scored three runs in the sixth and the go-ahead run in the seventh as Tigers defeated the Archbishop Murphy 4-3 in a Cascade Conference softball game on Monday.
A costly error in the outfield with two outs provided Granite Falls with the two unearned runs in the top of the sixth that were needed to tie the game up at three a piece. Two more costly errors in the seventh led to Emily Walbon driving in the go-ahead run. Mikayla Engstrom attempted to give the Tigers a two-run lead, but was called out at the plate for the final out of the inning. Tigers starting pitcher Lauren Harding retired the side in order in the bottom half of the seventh with a strikout and two pop-outs to shortstop Caitlyn Munce.
“One of the people that has made a huge impact for them this season has been Munce,” said Wildcats head coach Stephanie Harmon. “I tell my players to hit around her, because it’s going to be an automatic out if you hit it towards her.”
Although Munce proved to be key defensively it was her teammates, led by freshman Kelsey Bechtholdt, that led the Tigers at the plate. Bechtholt finished the day batting 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Whitehouse led the Archbishop Murphy hitters, going 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in the loss.
