EVERETT — The Mountlake Terrace softball team approached the 3A District Tournament like the Hawks had nothing to lose.
Now come Thursday, they have a district championship to win.
Mountlake Terrace, the No. 4 seed from the dominant Wesco South 3A league which won all four first-round district games, won two games on Thursday — including a 4-3 victory over Shorecrest in the semifinals to clinch a 3A state berth and a spot in the district championship.
“We’ve been right in all the games that we’ve played against the (Wesco 3A) teams so we knew we could come out and battle and take a win from them,” said Mountlake Terrace head coach Shannon Rasmussen. “I told the girls we’ve got nothing to lose and they came together and fought. They definitely saved their best softball for the end.”
Maddy Kristjanson batted 3-for-4 and pitched the final two innings for Mountlake Terrace. Kelsey Watson went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored.
Shorecrest took the early lead thanks to a two-run homer by Amanda Hartley (2-for-2) in the first inning.
