The Game
The Lethbridge Hurricanes came out with a sense of urgency Saturday as they snapped Everett’s streak of 10 straight games garnering at least a point in the standings.
That was surprising on one level, given that Lethbridge is on its long U.S. Division swing. But it was unsurprising on another because the Hurricanes dropped a tough 4-3 decision Friday night to the Seattle Thunderbirds in Kent. Head coach Kevin Constantine admitted it took the Tips at least half of the first period to really get going.
The Tips weren’t without chances. The final flurry at the end resulted in two official shots on the board, but in reality it was tough to see exactly happens during that scrum inside the crease.
Dominic Zwerger set up Lucas Skrumeda’s goal with soft deft stickwork on the rush in the second period. Zwerger now has 11 points in his last eight games.
Both of Lethbridge’s goals were the result of defensive breakdowns by the Tips. The first came after a neutral zone turnover and a defenseman falling down, and the second was a counterattack after Tyler Wong got behind the defense.
Everett is still averaging 3.18 goals per game – still better than last year’s 2.53 figure. However, the Tips have topped the two-goal threshold just three times in their last eight games: Tuesday’s 6-1 at home against Calgary with five power-play goals, a 5-2 win over Portland on Nov. 5 that included two late empty-netters, and a 4-1 win over Red Deer on Nov. 2. This isn’t necessarily a trend, but it’s worth watching.
When The Final Score Doesn’t Matter

The Turning Point
Wong’s breakaway goal at 11:35 in the third was the game-winner.
Three Stars
1. Lethbridge F Tyler Wong: The captain scored the game-winning goal.
2. Lethbridge G Stuart Skinner: The netminder saved 30 of Everett’s 31 shots.
3. Everett D Lucas Skrumeda: The overager scored his first goal of the season.
