REFLECTIONS: Hart, Ormsby and Tips top Cougars for third straight win

The Game

The Silvertips are officially on a winning streak as Friday’s 3-1 over visiting Prince George was their third straight. The 0-for-8 power-play showing is brutal, but the Cougars have the WHL’s top penalty-killing unit.

In the end, the Tips did enough to win as they generated 50 shots and converted 47 of them. Carter Hart wasn’t overly tested in his return to the crease, but he made all the saves he needed to make. He said he felt some fatigue in the third period, but the relatively light workload worked to his advantage.

Monroe native and former Seattle Thunderbird Luke Ormsby made his Tips debut Friday. Ormsby even got to start alongside longtime pal and fellow former Everett Youth Hockey player Wyatte Wylie.

Everett defenseman Gianni Fairbrother leveled Prince George forward Liam Ryan in the first period, and the two later dropped gloves in the second. Both were given game misconduct penalties and sent to the dressing rooms. I don’t know if there is history between the two, but both are 2000-born Vancouver, B.C., natives who played for rival midget teams the past two seasons. Read into that what you will.

Fortunately for the Tips, they dressed all seven defenseman as Montana Onyebuchi centered the fourth line. So Onyebuchi was able to jump back on defense after Fairbrother’s ejection.

Note: 2001-born forward Mark Liwiski was officially a healthy scratch, but he wasn’t at the arena. Head coach Dennis Williams said after the game that Liwiski is being disciplined for “a violation of team rules.” Liwiski was Everett’s third-round pick in the 2016 bantam draft. The Manitoba native recorded 54 points in 37 games last season with the midget AAA Parkland Rangers. Liwiski has been held without a point in 10 games so far this season.

The Turning Point

Patrick Bajkov scored the game-winner at 18:38 in the third.

Three Stars

Prince George G Tavin Grant: Grant was terrific with 47 saves in a tough-luck loss

Everett F Orrin Centazzo: Centazzo scored Everett’s first goal.

Everett F Connor Dewar: ‘The Pitbull’ assisted Bajkov’s game-winner and sealed it with an empty-netter.
