SPOKANE — Robert Sacre had 18 points and 11 rebounds as Gonzaga beat San Diego 77-60 on Saturday night.
Elias Harris and Sam Dower scored 15 apiece for Gonzaga (16-3, 6-1 West Coast) and Gary Bell Jr. added 11. Dower scored 13 of his points in the second half and Harris finished with 13 rebounds.
Darian Norris led San Diego (7-12, 2-5) with 20 points. Dennis Kramer had 14 and Johnny Dee added 10.
Gonzaga’s size was too much for San Diego. The Bulldogs outrebounded San Diego 39-29 and had 42 points in the paint, compared to just 30 for the Toreros.
Gonzaga led by as many as 24 points despite being up just 32-30 in the opening minute of the second half.
The Toreros scored the opening basket of the second half to get within two points, the closest they had been since the opening minutes. But San Diego went scoreless for nearly five minutes, and Harris and Sacre combined to score the next 11 points to extend Gonzaga’s lead to 43-30.
Consecutive baskets by Dower, capping a 10-2 run, gave the Bulldogs a 55-36 lead with 10:03 left.
Kramer scored six points during a 9-2 San Diego run to pull within 57-45, but Gonzaga scored the next 12 points, making it 69-45. The Bulldogs’ lead wasn’t threatened the rest of the way.
After shooting 39 percent in the first half, Gonzaga made 68 percent of its shots after halftime.
Although both teams started freshman backcourts, San Diego had just eight turnovers and Gonzaga had 12.
Coming off a game in which they made 14 of 19 3-pointers, the Toreros converted just 5 of 18 against the Bulldogs.
Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm through the first nine minutes. San Diego connected on just 2 of 10 shots and the Bulldogs were 5 for 15. Gonzaga used a 6-0 run to take its biggest lead of the first half and led 28-17 with 6:43 left. But the Toreros held Gonzaga to two field goals the rest of the half and a late 6-0 run pulled them within 32-28.
San Diego coach Bill Grier is in his fifth season with San Diego after spending 16 years as a Gonzaga assistant.
This was the 100th Gonzaga victory in the McCarthey Athletic Center. The Bulldogs have only lost seven times in the building since it opened in 2004.
San Diego has not won in Spokane since 2000 and has now lost 29 of the last 31 games in the series.
