Seagulls volleyball beats Meadowdale in four sets

EVERETT — Everett defeated Meadowdale 3-1 to extend its winning streak to 3-0 and the Seagulls didn’t need five sets to do it.

After beating Stanwood and Glacier Peak in five-set thrillers last week, the Seagulls finally finished a match in less than five sets. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t still have to fight for the nonleague victory. The errors that turned their past two into nail-biters didn’t disappear completely, but they were able to recover more quickly and minimize the damage, according to Everett coach Kris Jones.

“Our goal was cleaning up (the errors). … I think we did that,” Jones said. “It was nice to finish in less than five.”

Everett got off to a good start, taking down the Mavericks 25-19 in the first set and building a lead in the second, but then Meadowdale went on a run.

“It was flowing at the beginning, but got interrupted in the middle. … We couldn’t finish on that one,” Jones said.

The Seagulls lost the second set 25-23, but they were able to feed off of the energy and excitement of such a close battle.

“We just kind of rolled over that momentum into the next match,” Jones said. “I think we got timid there in game two.”

Jones talked to her team about being more aggressive and about making fewer errors. She is pleased about the 3-0 start, but is also aware that this is still early.

“I’m leery of the fact that we have to play all three of those teams when it counts. We got a sneak peak at them. … They got a sneak peak at us too.” Jones said.

Kayla Heman (24 digs) and Katie Heddington (5 kills, 5 blocks) both had good nights for Everett. Amy Rickel had an impressive 53 digs for Meadowdale in the loss.
