Vernon Davis gives the 49ers an early lead
Less than three minutes into the game, San Francisco leads 7-0 after a 42-yard touchdown pass from Alex Smith to TE Vernon Davis. Davis also had a 22-yard catch on third-and-10 to keep the drive alive. Considering that the Seahawks are short handed on offense, this is hardly the start this team needed.
Seahawks punt on first possession
Even minus Ben Obomanu and Mike Williams, the Seahawks came out throwing on their first possession—they threw four times and ran once. Seattle did pick up one first down, but ended up punting after that. Leon Washington looked like he might have had a big return on the kickoff, but slipped on a part of the field that looks to have been recently re-sodded.
Seahawks tie it
Ruvell Martin caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Matt Hasselbeck—Martin’s first score since 2008—to make it a 7-7 game. Martin, who the Seahawks cut before training camp, then re-signed in November, had not caught a pass this season, but is starting today with Mike Williams and Ben Obomanu out.
Niners take the lead, then take back the ball
San Francisco answered Seattle’s touchdown with a field goal drive, though the kick barely went through after Aaron Curry deflected it.
Not long after that field goal, Michael Robinson had a Matt Hasselbeck pass go off his hands and right to 49ers LB Takeo Spikes. Bit moment here for the Seahawks defense to try to keep that turnover from turning into points.
Two turnovers lead to 10 SF points
After the interception, the Seahawks’ defense held the 49ers to a field goal, but three plays after that, Matt Hasselbeck fumbled on a sack, giving the 49ers the ball at the 17-yard line. Alex Smith hit WR Josh Morgan for a touchdown after that, making it 20-7 with 8:04 left in the second quarter.
Hasselbeck throws his fourth pick
Since I last checked in (sorry, like I said earlier, spotty internet) Hasselbeck has thrown three interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown. It’s now 37-7, and the only question now is whether Pete Carroll will let Hasselbeck finish the game.
Because this game is getting so out of hand, and because the internet connection is so bad here, I’m gonna end the game thread other than checking in with injury updates if there are any.
