Yesterday Marshawn Lynch’s back became a national story when a report came out that back spasms could have his status in doubt for this week’s game. Well as it turns out, if you take Pete Carroll for his word anyway, that’s old news. Lynch, as has been well documented, had spasms in his back flying home from Seattle’s second preseason game, and Carroll said there has been no new occurrence of that. Lynch has not practiced since that game in Denver, but did go through today’s walkthrough, and Carroll said the running back’s status won’t be known until the end of the week. So yes, Lynch’s status is still up in the air, but it appears he has not suffered a setback in his recovery.
“He went through the walkthrough today and looked pretty good,” Carroll said. “We’ll have to take him day by day and see how he responds to the work, and we really won’t know until the end of the week unless something changes. The process that he’s gone through, he’s aerobically in good shape, we need to get him back his football legs and get him enough reps to do that. He’ll go real light today and we’ll continue to progress as we go through the week. We’ll just have to wait and see, I can’t call it for you.”
Carroll later said, “I’m just going day-to-day. Right now Turbin will take all the first-team snaps and get us ready. We’ll be prepared to rotate our guys like we always do. (Kregg Lumpkin) will be ready to go if we need him, but you can’t cancel Marshawn out now. That’s too early to know that. He looked fine today.
“We need to see how he responds each day to the work that he does the day before, and until we know that we won’t know what’s going on.”
Asked if he though he would be able to play, Lynch said, “The goal is to. But I stay ready, so if I do, I do, and if I don’t, I don’t.”
Carroll also used the “We’ll wait and see how he does” answer when asked about receiver Golden Tate, who sprained his knee in Thursday’s preseason game.
“He’s not going to do much,” Carroll said. “He’s going to run tomorrow for the first time… We’ll just see what happens with that. Don’t know. There’s no reason to call it, we don’t have to. We’ll wait and see how he does.”
If Tate can’t go, that will likely mean a starting role for Braylon Edwards, Carroll said.
The only other player who is in question for health reasons, Carroll said, is defensive end Greg Scruggs (hamstring), who is not expected to practice Wednesday.
