Seahawks release CB Will Blackmon

The Seahawks announced they have terminated the veteran contract of cornerback Will Blackmon, as well as the release of receiver Donavon Kemp, a move that actually happened Monday, but not in time to make the release the Seahawks sent out that morning.

Teams have until 1 pm PT to get down to 75 players, which means the Seahawks still have four moves to make, but that doesn’t necessarily mean four more cuts are coming. Players on the active/PUP list count towards the roster, but those on the reserve/PUP list do not, so there’s a good chance the Seahawks could just move players like Tharold Simon, Percy Harvin and Greg Scruggs to reserve/PUP. And if you’re wondering the difference, when players open camp on the active/PUP list, teams can bring them back at any time, which they did with Zach Miller and Robert Turbin. Once a player goes on reserve/PUP, it frees up a roster spot, but those players are not eligible to return until after Week 6 at the earliest.

As for Blackmon, he was almost certainly not part of the early round of releases because he was one of the team’s worst 15 players, but rather because the Seahawks knew he wouldn’t have a role in a crowded secondary, and wanted to give a six-year veteran a better chance at finding a new team.
