Seahawks reportedly finalizing a deal with DE Jared Allen… or not

The Seahawks have been quiet thus far in free agency, but it appears they’re about to make a big splash. According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, the Seahawks and Jared Allen are working out the details on a deal to bring the former Viking to Seattle.

UPDATE: Apparently the deal isn’t quite so close to done after all. Following ESPN’s initial report, several media outlets, as well as Werder himself, now say Allen and the Seahawks have not yet agreed to a deal, and that Allen will spend the weekend considering their offer.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Allen won’t be a Seahawk, just that it’s not quite a done deal yet.

Allen was in town making his second free agent visit with the Seahawks, and if he does return to Seattle to sign, he would bolster what would have already been a strong pass rush in 2014.

Allen, who turns 32 next month, has registered double-digit sack totals in seven straight seasons, and even if his age has started to catch up to him a bit, Seattle’s system of rotating defensive linemen frequently would help keep Allen fresh through the season.

By retaining Michael Bennett in free agency, and perhaps adding Allen, one of the league’s top pass rushers over the last decade, the Seahawks could well end up improving a pass rush that was already very good last year, even after releasing Chris Clemons to create cap space.
