Seahawks trade G John Moffitt, release K Carson Wiggs

Two of the competitions going on in Seahawks training camp have apparently been settled.

John Moffitt, who was fighting J.R. Sweezy for the starting right guard job, was traded to Cleveland Monday for defensive lineman Brian Sanford, who went undrafted out of Temple in 2010. The Seahawks also waived kicker Carson Wiggs, a move that indicates Steven Hauschka having locked up the kicking job, which hardly comes as a surprise.

Moffitt, Seattle’s third-round pick in 2011, was a starter as a rookie until a knee injury ended his season. He was also suspended four games that year for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing drugs—the result of taking adderall without a prescription according to his agent—but served that suspension while on injured reserve. Last year, Sweezy and Moffitt split time in the staring lineup, but Sweezy had been ahead of Moffitt in the competition in camp.

Sanford, who is listed at 6-2, 280 pounds, has appeared in six games in his career and has been credited with five tackles, all in 2011. How Seattle will use him remains to be seen, though based on measurables alone—Sanford ran a 5.04 40-yard dash at his pro day—he does not fit the mold of an edge pass rusher, which is currently an area of concern for the Seahawks with Chris Clemons still recovering from knee surgery, Cliff Avril easing back into things from a hamstring injury, and Bruce Irvin, who is suspended for the first four games, not yet back from a groin injury.

The Seahawks also signed defensive tackle Dewayne Charrington, who signed in May with New England as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State.
