KENNEWICK — The Everett Silvertips succeeded in shoring up their own end Thursday night.
Unfortunately for the Tips, the offense dried up.
Everett could only find the net once as the Tips fell 3-1 to the Tri-City Americans in their first road game of the season.
Both teams were seeking their first victory of the season. But Tri-City (1-2-0-0) took advantage of Everett penalties, receiving power-play goals from Brian Williams and Malte Stromwall. Then goaltender Eric Comrie did the rest, withstanding a late Everett push before Justin Feser clinched it with a late empty-net goal. Comrie finished with 28 saves.
Manraj Hayer scored the lone goal for Everett (0-2-0-1). Austin Lotz made 33 saves in goal for the Tips.
Everett came into the game having allowed six goals in each of its first two games of the season. The Tips were much tighter defensively Thursday. However, they couldn’t replicate their six-goal output in Sunday’s 7-6 shootout loss to Prince George. Everett opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game, but couldn’t find the net the rest of the game.
Everett got into penalty trouble early, but flipped the script by scoring short-handed 2 minutes, 16 seconds into the game. Joshua Winquist created a turnover that led to a two-on-one, and he fed Hayer, who made a move around Comrie to give the Tips a 1-0 lead.
However, the penalties continued to accumulate, and the Americans scored on the power play at 7:18 of the first. Williams shot as he crossed the blue line, and the puck eluded Lotz to knot it at 1-1.
Tri-City began to get control of the game in the second period, outshooting Everett 18-7, and the Americans took the lead with another power-play goal at 12:42. Lotz spilled the initial shot, allowing Stromwall to put the puck into an unguarded net and make it 2-1.
Everett responded in the third, outshooting Tri-City 12-5 and creating several chances, particularly during a late power play when Landon Oslanski hit the post with a shot. However, Comrie made several good saves to secure it for the Americans.
