SPOKANE — The Everett Silvertips spent four days in Spokane. They left with no goals.
Everett suffered its second straight shutout at the hands of the Spokane Chiefs, falling 4-0 Tuesday night.
Everett arrived in Spokane on Saturday for a game against the Chiefs, then remained in town until Tuesday’s game. However, it proved a fruitless trip for the Tips as they lost 5-0 Saturday before suffering a near identical fate Tuesday.
Spokane rookie goaltender Garret Hughson recorded his first career WHL shutout, making some big stops among his 22 saves, and the Chiefs broke the game open with three third-period goals.
Mikulas Rimmel, Connor Chartier, Dylan Walchuk and Adam Helewka scored for Spokane (13-6-0-0).
Daniel Cotton made 31 saves in goal for Everett (6-12-0-2), which dropped its sixth straight. The Tips have been shut out four times in 20 games this season.
Everett got into penalty trouble in the first period, having to kill off four Spokane power plays, but it was while the Tips had an advantage that they fell behind 1-0. Just as an Everett power play expired, Rimmel took advantage of a turnover by Tips defenseman Landon Oslanski to open the scoring at 14 minutes, 35 seconds.
The Tips tilted the ice their direction in the second period and created several good scoring chances. However, Everett couldn’t convert and it remained 1-0 going into the third.
Then the Chiefs blew the game open.
Chartier doubled Spokane’s lead at 7:36 of the third period when he put home a rebound. The Tips had a chance to get back into it less than a minute later when Spokane was whistled for having too many men on the ice. But 13 seconds into Everett’s power play the Chiefs scored short-handed, Walchuk putting in a rebound for the backbreaker at 8:46.
Helewka added icing to the cake at 13:27 when he put home a rebound to complete the scoring.
