YAKIMA — Smoke from area wildfires has forced Central Washington University in Ellensburg to move its home football game Saturday to Bothell.
The Wildcats will face Azusa Pacific University at Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell. The Daily Record of Ellensburg reports the game time also has been moved up by 30 minutes to 12:30 p.m. CWU athletics director Jack Bishop says the school was excited about hosting its home opener this weekend but couldn’t subject players or fans to the poor air quality that’s expected.
Local players on the Central Washington roster include: RB Nic Cooper (Kamiak), LB Mitch Haldane (Mountlake Terrace), DL Nick Rouser (Oak Harbor), WR Christian Gasca (Lake Stevens), DL Jerod Baker (Arlington), QB Jake Nelson (Lake Stevens), WR Brady Pahukoa (Lake Stevens), RB Blake Williams-Miller (Everett), LB Korey Young (Lake Stevens).
State officials have warned residents in Ellensburg and Wenatchee of hazardous air conditions.
The Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office also ordered new evacuations northwest of Ellensburg due to several wildfires. The Table Mountain complex of fires has grown to cover 11,590 acres, or 18 square miles.
