Basketball is generally an indoor sport, but it’s still at the mercy of what happens outside.
The blast of snow that hit Western Washington led to school closures and the postponement of two basketball events involving local teams on Monday.
The Everett High School girls basketball team was supposed to kick off its season at 7:30 p.m. Monday against Squalicum in Bellingham, but poor weather conditions in Whatcom County forced Squalicum to switch the game to Thursday night.
South of Everett, the Edmonds School District postponed its preseason basketball jamborees involving boys and girls teams from Edmonds-Woodway, Lynnwood, Meadowdale and Mountlake Terrace. The exhibition games, which consist of two 10-minute quarters, have been rescheduled for 7 p.m. tonight (weather permitting). The girls play at E-W High School and the boys are at Terrace.
Meadowdale boys coach Chad McGuire said the jamboree delay is fine but it was unfortunate to not be able to practice at all – a result of Meadowdale’s school closure. “We would have liked to practice because at this point we want to get in a rhythm,” said McGuire, ” … but we don’t play our first (regular-season) game until Thursday.”
Meadowdale, which returns starting forwards Nero Threet and Milan Moncrief, plays host to Arlington in a non-division game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
It’s unclear if weather will affect tonight’s busier load of local scheduled prep events.
“It all depends on the conditions (on Tuesday). We have to take it day by day,” said Everett School District athletic secretary Danielle Marks.
Sultan’s Mann, Richer honored
Josh Mann (football) and Britney Richer (soccer) were named Sultan’s Outstanding Fall Athletes. Mann, a senior running back/defensive back, set a single-season rushing record (1,411 yards) to help the Turks football team reach the Class 2A district playoffs. Richer, a senior midfielder, was a team co-captain. She is a natural leader in sports and at school, Sultan soccer coach Andrea Fuller said in an e-mail.
Early tests
So much for easing into things. The Monroe girls basketball team starts off its season against Jackson and Meadowdale, Wesco South teams that advanced to the 4A state tournament in March. Monroe coach Alan Dickson, whose team is expected to contend in the Wesco North, said it’s good to challenge your squad early instead of scheduling games against weak opponents because “you’re better off (learning) what you need to do (to improve) right away.” Monroe plays host to Meadowdale on Wednesday and plays at Jackson Dec. 6.
Coach lauds E-W’s Jones
In a press release announcing his newly signed recruits, University of Portland baseball coach Chris Sperry said E-W senior pitcher Owen Jones “is extremely competitive on the mound and has a great presence. I expect really good things from him.” Jones was an All-Wesco South first-team infielder and second-team pitcher for E-W last spring.
