Scouting report
Priority No. 1 for the Sounders is getting back on track after consecutive losses, but Seattle can also make a small bit of MLS history if it can beat the Colorado Rapids this afternoon. Since losing to the Rapids in May of 2010, the Sounders have won seven straight over Colorado. No team in league history has won eight straight over an opponent.
“Sigi (Schmid) always say it’s always good to be the first team to do something,” said forward Lamar Neagle. “… This is another time—we can be the first to beat a team eight times in a row. But I’m sure they know that as well, I’m sure they’ve heard it. They don’t want to be on the opposite side of that, and they’re doing well right now so it will be a good game.”
Breaking an obscure record is hardly the most important thing a victory will do for Seattle, however. After a disappointing first half to the season, the Sounders (7-7-3) find themselves looking up at six teams in the Western Conference standings, including the sixth-place Rapids (8-7-6). The good news for the Sounders is that they have games in hand over the rest of the conference, meaning they can make up ground in a hurry, and they also have 10 of their final 17 at home, including three in a row. Since losing their season opener then tying their next two home games, the Sounders have won four straight at CenturyLink Field, outscoring opponents 13-4 along the way. The Sounders can quiet a lot of their doubters if today’s game kicks off a three-game winning streak, a realistic goal at home.
“It’s important for us to get wins at home, always,” said Sounders coach Sigi Schmid. “If we can get a home streak, continue to win at home, that’ll go a long ways towards rectifying a lot of issues.”
