South Whidbey no-hits Murphy baseball to complete sweep

LANGLEY — South Whidbey pitchers Charlie Patterson and Colton Sterba combined to no-hit Archbishop Murphy as the Falcons baseball team finished off a three-game sweep of the Wildcats with a 2-0 win on Friday.

Falcons head coach Tom Fallon couldn’t ever recall sweeping Archbishop Murphy during his tenure.

“I’ve been coaching since 2000 and I can’t remember doing this,” Fallon said. “They’ve been so solid for so long. This was a big series for us … it puts us out a little more (in front) for the No. 1 seed for the 1A playoffs.”

Patterson struggled in the first with two walks, but escaped without any damage done. The sophomore, whose performance Fallon described as “efficient,” struck out six and pitched into the sixth before handing the ball to Sterba with a runner on first. Sterba induced an 1-6-3 double play to end the inning and the senior right-hander had no trouble in the seventh, capping off the game with a strikeout.

Wildcats starter Connor Sand kept pace with Patterson until the fifth. Mo Hamsa led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and scored on CJ Sutfins two-out base hit. The Falcons managed to add another run in the sixth on Brent Piehler’s two-out single that scored Sterba.

“(We had) timely hitting and pitching and defense (this series),” Fallon said. “Just another pretty clean, tight ball game. All three games were tight.”
