Sox rally for 3-2 win over Canadians

EVERETT — The AquaSox pitching staff worked hard to keep Everett within striking distance, and it paid off.

The Frogs scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Vancouver Canadians 3-2 after trailing the entire game on Friday.

Christian Carmichael started the rally, scoring Austin Wilson from first base on a one-out triple. Canadians center fielder Chaz Frank was playing deep and had to run for it, attempting a diving catch and allowing the ball to get past him to the wall.

Phillips Castillo followed with a game-winning single the next at bat, scoring pinch-runner Ian Miller from third.

Everett’s other run came when Wilson led off the second with a home run, gaining back some of the ground lost when Justin Atkinson’s double put Vancouver up 2-0 in the first.

Both teams settled in after that, with AquaSox starter Lars Huijer managing to pitch his way out of trouble in his final inning in the fifth. He struck out the side — two strikeouts after he gave up back-to-back walks.

The Canadians showed more ability to extend at-bats, with Huijer over 100 pitches by the time his five innings were through.

Vancouver’s Colton Turner threw only 56 over the same span.

The Canadians threatened several more times, with extra-base hits in each of the final three innings. L.B. Dantzler led off the seventh with a double off the top of the wall. while Nick Valenza gave up a one-out triple to Brenden Kalfus in the eighth, but kept him off of home plate. Michael Reeves doubled in the ninth, but the Everett bullpen retired the next three in a row to keep the AquaSox within one.

Vancouver left a total of 12 runners stranded, 10 of them in scoring position.
