SEATTLE — After seeing his first-team units for an extended period of time in Saturday’s intrasquad scrimmage, University of Washington football coach Steve Sarkisian has a better idea of what to expect from his Huskies this season.
“What I like about them is they keep getting better,” Sarkisian told reporters after the scrimmage at Husky Stadium. “That’s what you hope for. You never want them to take a step back.”
Quarterback Jake Locker led two long touchdown drives, culminating one with a scoring pass to Jermaine Kearse, to give Sarkisian optimism as the team begins the final week of training camp.
“I thought Jake was really good all day,” Sarkisian said in his post-scrimmage session with the press.
Locker completed 12 of 19 passes for 181 yards. Backup Ronnie Fouch was 7-for-13 for 108 yards and a touchdown.
One of the biggest plays of the day came when running back Curtis Shaw broke a 50-yard run while working with the third team. The session also included a kickoff return touchdown from cornerback Quinton Richardson, marking his second return score in as many scrimmages last week.
Running back Johri Fogerson scored one touchdown and set up another with a long pass reception.
The offense got off to a slow start, scoring only a single field goal in the first half of action. The first unit returned to the field in the second half, at which time Locker threw the touchdown pass.
“I thought it went relatively well for a scrimmage atmosphere,” Sarkisian said. “Offensively, we started slow. We really started to execute in the second half. The defense played physical early on.
“In general, it took the guys as a team awhile to get adjusted to being out there on their own, not out there with the coaches yelling and screaming. Fortunately, we’ve got two weeks to get used to that environment.”
