We’ll start Wednesday’s postcard with Tuesday night, when media flocked to Chelsea Piers for the only thing that will attract reporters faster than Marshawn Lynch press availability:
Free food and drinks.
This was my first Super Bowl media party, so I don’t know any better, but to hear it from some of the veteran scribes who have been to several, this year’s Super Bowl host committee did a heck of a job. Lots of good food from local eateries, good drinks, and Questlove from The Roots serving as the D.J.
Later that evening we learned that John McGrath of the Tacoma News Tribune is quite the karaoke performer. But that’s a story for another forum. …
Wednesday morning it was back on the bus to New Jersey for another day of Seahawks media availability, which led to another brief session with Marshawn Lynch, which led to a whole lot of hand-wringing on both sides of the “should he have to talk?” debate. All players are available again today, so this weird Lynch sideshow will have to go on one more day unless he’s willing to write a large check.
And speaking of buses, be sure you take the time to find the rant that ESPN’s Keith Olbermann had on the practice of giving police escorts to media buses this week. While I do enjoy the fact that we’ve been able to avoid some traffic (certainly not all of it), I do have to admit that it seems a little absurd. Or maybe it’s a good thing, because to hear some of the people on today’s return trip complain, spending 45 minutes in traffic while in one of the world’s best cities to cover one of the world’s biggest sporting events is a fate worse than death. Oh well, thanks either way, various New York and New Jersey police departments.
All right, time to sign off for the night. I’m off to check out the Puppy Bowl Experience in Times Square. OK, not really, but that is an actual thing.
