The Oilers’ take on Jujhar Khaira

I was poking around and dug up this blog post by Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal from a few days ago. Matheson spoke with Edmonton Oilers chief scout Stu MacGregor regarding the signing of forward Jujhar Khaira, whose WHL rights are held by Everett, to an entry-level contract. There were a few things from this post that interested me:

– MacGregor said it was Khaira who approached the Oilers about signing, not the Oilers who compelled Khaira to sign. The decision was a developmental one, with Khaira wanting to play more games than he would at Michigan Tech.

– Matheson made it sound like it’s likely Khaira will end up being assigned to Everett (which will play approximately twice as many games as Michigan Tech).

– For you conspiracy theorists out there, there was no mention of the possibility of Khaira’s rights being traded to the Edmonton Oil Kings, who are owned by the Oilers.

Khaira was a third-round pick in the 2012 NHL draft who’s coming off a good freshman season for Michigan Tech. By signing with the Oilers, Khaira surrendered his NCAA eligibility. Needless to say, the Tips would welcome the 19-year-old power forward with open arms.
