Tri-City 3, Everett 1

TALKING POINTS

A better performance from Everett tonight than in Friday’s 6-1 loss to Vancouver, but the Tips remained winless in the second half after losing their third straight.

Everett played with much more purpose and didn’t give the high-flying Americans a whole lot to work with. But with leading scorer Tyler Maxwell joining a lengthy scratch list, the offensively-challenged Tips were short on options. And when Everett did get good looks at goal, Tri-City netminder Drew Owsley was there to keep the puck out of the net.

This was basically a 2-1 game. The suspense was unfortunately taken out of the final 1:33 when Everett’s Brennan Yadlowski took a tripping penalty. Tri-City scored on the resulting power play to ice it.

Everett has scored just two goals in its three games since the Christmas break. The Tips have now scored the fewest goals in the WHL.

TURNING POINT

Everett was able to get things going after Kellan Tochkin scored late in the second period to cut the deficit to 2-1. Then on an Everett power play early in the third period, Owsley performed grand theft on Josh Winquist on a rebound, making a tremendous lunging glove save to prevent the Tips from tying it. That was truly a game-winning save.

HIT OF THE DAY

On the last shift of the first period, Everett’s Clayton Cumiskey and Josh Birkholz put consecutive crunches into the boards on Tri-City defensemen Spencer Humphries and Brock Sutherland.

THREE STARS

First star: Brendan Shinnimin, Tri-City. Two goals and one assist, showed good tenacity, particularly for his second goal.

Second star: Owsley. 23 saves, the one on Winquist was the biggest.

Third star: Kent Simpson, Everett. 26 saves, made a number of good saves in close.

The Herald’s honorable mention: pick’em. Everett had a number of players who picked their game up noticeably from the previous night.
