UCLA OT White suspended after arrest

LOS ANGELES — UCLA offensive lineman Torian White has been suspended from the team indefinitely after his arrest on suspicion of sexual assault.

UCLA confirmed White was arrested early Sunday morning at an apartment complex near campus after police were called to the residence in response to a disturbance.

White was still in custody Tuesday afternoon, and district attorney’s office spokeswoman Jane Robison said her office has requested further investigation of the incident.

“We are aware of the situation involving Torian White, and we take these accusations very seriously,” UCLA coach Jim Mora said. “Torian has been suspended from the team indefinitely while the legal process and student discipline process run their course. Due to the ongoing police investigation, we are unable to discuss this matter further at this time.”

White was the 14th-ranked Bruins’ starting left tackle, but the 6-foot-5, 290-pound sophomore is out for at least the rest of the regular season after breaking a bone and tearing a ligament in his right leg during a game at Utah on Oct. 3.

White, a Los Angeles-area native, also started at right tackle for UCLA this season. He started all 14 games at left tackle for the Bruins as a redshirt freshman in 2012.

The Bruins (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12) host No. 19 Arizona State on Saturday at the Rose Bowl in their penultimate game of the regular season. UCLA is chasing the Sun Devils (8-2, 6-1) for the top spot in the Pac-12 South.

UCLA has persevered through injuries and off-the-field woes throughout its successful season.

Most prominently, walk-on receiver Nick Pasquale was killed in late September while walking on a road in his native San Clemente, Calif.

The Bruins’ offensive line has been hit hard by injuries, with White and fellow tackle Simon Goines getting sidelined in recent weeks. Xavier Su’a-Filo has moved into the starting spot at left tackle, and the Bruins have started three freshmen on their line in recent weeks along with sophomore center Jake Brendel.
