Video of Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, plus Avril talks Romo

First off, here’s Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll speaking about the final week of the preseason, as well as the performance of the first-team offense in last Thursday’s 27-17 preseason victory over the Dallas Cowboys:

In that game against Dallas, Seattle defensive end Cliff Avril sacked Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo on the third play of the game. Romo was injured on the play, and although he walked off the field under his own power he did not return — though he lobbied on the sidelines to come back in. It was later revealed that Romo suffered a broken bone in his back that will reportedly keep him out six-to-10 weeks. Avril received flack from Cowboys fans on social media for celebrating the sack while Romo remained on the ground. Here’s what Avril had to say about it Sunday:

“I didn’t even see him until after I celebrated, seeing he’s still on the ground,” Avril said. “That’s when I saw what was happening. After he got up and walked to the sidelines I tapped him on the leg and talked to him for a split second, I didn’t know it was that serious.”

As for the reaction from Cowboys fans?

“I’m definitely surprised,” said Avril, who’s in the process of reaching out to Romo. “The Cowboys fans have sent me a lot of crazy tweets, but I don’t pay too much attention to it. It’s kind of interesting to see how you’re just making a play on the football field and someone reacts a certain way about it. But it is what it is.”

Other things worth noting from Sunday:

– The deadline for teams to cut their rosters from 90 to 75 players is Tuesday at 1 p.m., and Seattle will use all that time. The Seahawks, having played on Thursday, had the opportunity to make their moves during the two days off following the game. However, Seattle essentially had it’s full roster at practice Sunday. Carroll said that while the process of making cuts has begun, the team won’t announce anything until Tuesday morning.

– On the injury front, defensive tackle Jarran Reed (toe) and tight end Nick Vannett (ankle) will not play in Thursday’s preseason finale at Oakland. Reed and Vannett were both injured in the Week 2 preseason game against Minnesota, and Carroll said it would be a race for either to be ready by the regular season opener. He said Reed was ahead of Vannett in the recovery process. Also, receiver Tanner McEvoy (groin) is questionable for Thursday’s contest.
